Highways and Transport
Potholes: after the snow there are lots of potholes all round Loughton. To help get them repaired as quickly as possible, please report them online to the County Council highways dept. (use the “Report a Highway fault” link on the right-hand side of the page) or phone 0845 603 7621.
LTC more grit bins
Loughton Town Council provides grit bins as a discretionary facility. They now have 26 in the town, and a waiting list. They usually have money for only 3 new ones a year, but are trying to increase this, given the huge recent demand for bins from all parts of the town. To let them know of a really bad spot needing a bin, contact them at contact@loughton-tc.gov.uk
County Council gritting programme
During the recent snow, Essex County Council cut back on its gritting programme to focus only on A roads, some B roads and access roads to hospitals, fire and ambulance stations. Gritters and crews were out night and day for three weeks. The list of roads covered is at http://www.essexcc.gov.uk/vip8/ecc/ECCWebsite/dis/ned.jsp?oid=145631. LRA County Cllr Chris Pond has notified County of some minor errors in the list. He has also called for Traps Hill, Borders Lane, and Forest Road/Earls Path in Loughton to be gritted - the two former roads are vital bus routes carrying about 4 buses an hour, and without the latter (and its extension into the village) the village of High Beech is likely to be unreachable. We are also concerned about access to schools, particularly in Staples Road.
Traps Hill
- LRA County Cllr Chris Pond and LRA vice-chairman David Linnell recently met a County Council Highways officer to discuss proposals for a double-yellow line up one side of Traps Hill, to remove the parking which has effectively turned this intoo a one-way road for much of the week. We hope to see some action soon (in the form of a consultation with residents).
- Because of the danger to residents of Rowans Way from speeding traffic on Traps Hill, LRA is pressing County Highways to cut back the tree which conceals the warning sign on Traps Hill from drivers coming from the Borders Lane/Alderton Hill junction, and to straighten the sign itself.
DISTRICT COUNCIL HIGHWAYS PANEL.
Improvements planned for Loughton are:
- B1393 (M25 to Wake Arms roundabout) delayed due to complexity of work - now scheduled for 2010.
- New bus shelter planned for Marlescroft Way, Oakwood Hill.
- Proposals for Chigwell Lane, Rectory Lane and Broadway shelved.
- Scheme for 'safer journeys to school' for Debden Park School planned for 2010.
- Junction improvements for Langston Road, Oakwood Hill, Chigwell Lane planned for 2010.
- The Highway Rangers (minor repairs) scheme was terminated shortly after it started. The savings could be used for a shared service with Harlow. It did useful work and Highways Panel councillors have recommended that the service should continue.
- Resurfacing works in Loughton for 2010/11 include Clays Lane, Westfields (Nursery Road), Old Station Road, Chigwell Lane, Traps Hill into Church Lane, Algers Road, Lower Park Road, Marjorams Avenue, Torrington Drive, Earls Path, Rectory Lane, Elmhurst Way, Drayton Avenue, Cranleigh Gardens, Broomfield Avenue
- Footway improvements this year include Grosvenor Drive, Buckhurst Way (side roads), and Westall Road.
- 28 new lamp columns orders for Loughton (not sure where they are going).
- Uncontrolled crossing Colebrook Lane and 2 other sites imminent.
- Collision site remedial works in High Road and Epping New Road within the next 2 months.
- Bus route improvements on 541,542 and 543 should have been implemented.
- CIF funding approved for signage for walkers and cyclists, February 2010.
Requests through localism budget, not yet approved:
- Revised parking, signing and lining in Traps Hill;
- lining, bollards and planting in Oakwood Hill;
- removal of traffic lights and re-direction of traffic at High Road junction with The Drive (this should help to speed up traffic-flow, and be better for pedestrians trying to cross here too);
- Roding Road traffic lights (phasing?);
- chicanes and pedestrian crossing in Chester Road.
All footways on Debden Estate to be inspected.See also [In the Town" "Parking and traffic"] and ["In the Community" "Roads"].
