Wheelie bins
LRA has followed up a number of issues - for instance,
- people can ask to opt out of the garden scheme and can have a kerbside caddy for food waste only,
- smaller bins can be provided,
- the waste collectors have been asked to put bins back properly,
- assisted collection schemes are available for people who find it difficult to get their waste to the front of their properties,
- you can ask for an extra green bin if you have a large garden*
- you can ask for a green bin if you live in a flat and you currently maintain a garden area*,
- if you live in a terraced property, or are exempt from the scheme, the Council may supply a compost bin.*
* The Council will make an assessment; you will need to show that you have made efforts to compost as much waste as possible.
Replacing wheelie bins
The contractors are supposed to replace the wheelie bins back to the point of collection. If this is not happening, please let Sue Goff (District Council, 01992 564193) know the address affected and she will speak to the contractor.
Difficulty moving the bin
Anyone having difficulty moving the bin when full can apply to the District Council for an assisted collection (Sue Goff: 01992 564193)
Maggots
Residents concerned about maggots can wrap or bag food waste in biodegradable bags with the appropriate logo, or use a good thickness of newspaper (it is generally only meat and fish that attracts flies and maggots). In some bins there appears to be a slight gap at the back of the handles – report any problems to the District Council (Sue Goff: 01992 564193). Residents with serious concerns could freeze any food waste and deposit it in the bin just prior to collection. |
